Volunteering in Shiga
Hey guys!
I hope the weather has been as warm up in Fukui as it's been here. Can it really be spring already?!
In April we're hosting our annual cleanup of Lake Biwa to celebrate Earth Day. It's in Nagahama which is just a short ride down the train line from you guys :) It'd be awesome if we could get some of our Fukui friends down here to help! I've copy pasta the info from our site.
Are you ready for this year's Lake Biwa Cleanup Challenge?!?! This year we have some great prizes lined up so we hope you can make it out!
What's the Lake Biwa Cleanup Challenge?
Its humbled beginnings were a group of ALTs and a JTE getting together on Earth Day to help make a dent in the trash that collects in Lake Biwa. Over the years it has grown into a competition with ALTs, local people, and even students helping to make Lake Biwa a cleaner place!
How does the competition work?
Each team can have up to 4 members. When you register your team, please email Kyle (kfkrayer@gmail.com) with your team name and first names of your teammates. I'll get back to you and let you know what your team color will be for the day. We'll ask that you wear shirts in this color the day of the competition if possible and we'll be bringing bands for you guys to wear in the color as well. Teams must be registered by Friday, April 9th. The day of make sure to bring gloves and, if you have them, rubber boots to protect yourselves from whatever we find in the Lake!
We also ask that everyone please bring 200 yen to help pay for the cleanup supplies and drinks we'll be bringing for everyone :)
The competition will be on Saturday, April 17th with a raindate set for April 24th. Check-in begins at 1:30pm and the competition starts at 2:00pm sharp! Your team will have 2 hours to try and collect the most garbage from Lake Biwa. Ganbare!!
What are the prizes?
The grand prize, given for most garbage collected, will be your team's choice of Hanshin Tigers tickets or Shiga Lakestars tickets provided by AJET! Woohoo! Prizes will also be given for strangest piece of garbage found, most disgusting piece of garbage found, and most recyclables found.
Who can participate?
Anyone! And we do mean anyone! As long as they are registered by April 9th they can come out and compete! Of course, anyone who wants to come help out after the registration date and not compete for a prize is welcome too! Last year we had students from Shiga high schools and local people help along with us JETs. The more the merrier! If you have students or friends that would like to compete, you can register for them on ShigaJET.
Let's get out there and make Mother Lake sparkle!!
