Internet recommendations
Hello everyone,
This is Alex, a new ALT in Fukui City.
I'm thinking about getting the internet in my apartment and I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for what to look into and how to start the process.
I'm not picky. I think I want the cheapest option. It doesn't need to be super fast or anything.
Thanks for any info. I hope you're all doing well!
Alex!

Search for Yahoo BB. They have English service available and I think are pretty cheap.
Another option is Flet's ADSL, but I think Yahoo BB is cheaper (I'm in the process of switching to them now).
hi alex..its mauricia ...im checking out ntt...freddie and a few other alts have it ..this is their number ..they also offer speakers in eng..call them and compare ..let me know what u think 0120 - 064 -337
or 0570-01-3522 (from landline)
or 03-3569 -3522 (from mobile/phone box)
Y r u switching too yahoo bb. Which provider did u have before ? I'm in the process of getting Internet but still undecided
in Fukui, NTT is the only choice if you want optic fiber.
it's a question of through which company you open the account.
NTT contract usually comes with Internet service provider.
Yahoo BB is one of them.
other major ones are OCN, nifty, Biglobe.
what's important is the benefit that comes with the contract.
For example, when I asked for NTT fiber optic at YAMADA-denki (electric app shop),
they gave me 30000 yen worth point which you can use at the store.
here's a comparison of prices you will be paying
http://kakaku.com/bb/ranking_FTTH_110040999918000000000012/?sort=3&Searc...
they all are about 6000yen per a month,
price next to it (30000 yen - 70000yen) is the benefit you will get.
some of the benefits are cash back.
I know you want your internet as soon as possible,
but if you want to know more about it, i can be your help.
find maki dono on FB or e-mail me at apfelringo at hot mail dot com.
which has the best benefits tho..the link is in japanese...i have an NTT line from the previous occupants and need to be reconnected ..whats the cheapest???
Did your predeccessor have the internet line or just the phone line?
if you want optic fiber, you have to have a special line installed for it.
ADSL (cheaper, but slower) uses the phone line.
If you already have a line specified for the internet, then all you have to do is to re-open.
please check if you have a LAN cable outlet in your room.
If you do, it might not count as a new contract.
you can call NTT or apply via internet.

or call toll free 0120-064337 (English support, open on weekdays 9:00AM - 9:00PM)
i need ur help.. its a box with the numbers mj - 2fc ..ive tried to email them asking for an agent to come see the box but no reply ..im not sure what it is ...do u know
It's a home phone line, not the internet.
Right now your home phone is closed, so it does nothing...
you have to ask them to open a new account for you, then to install the line to your house.
so i ask them to reconnect the phone line and then ask for internet...is this going to be expensive to reconnect . i can get a wireless router free for signing up with soft bank ....will this help me ....how does that work ..can you tell me ....
Hello,
if you have a Softbank cell phone you can usually get (Yahoo BB ADSL) Internet connection a little bit cheaper. Nowadays you don't need to own a phone line to use ADSL, you can just rent it from the NTT. It's probably somewhere between 1500-3000 yen/month, don't know if opening it will cost you extra.
You can go to any larger Softbank store, especially the ones at Yamada Denki or other big electronic stores, and ask about getting an Internet connection. They should be able to help you figure out your situation with the phone line (basically they call the NTT for you), get the phone line opened, and then set you up with the actual ADSL (through Yahoo BB). I would recommend this option as I helped my co-worker get her Internet connected last year at the same time she was buying an iPhone, and they hooked it up in less than a week if I remember correctly (although she didn't have to rent the line, she had a previous one in her apt that we just re-opened with the meiginin information), and she got the wireless router for free. The setup was in Japanese but really easy to make.
To reopen an NTT phone line you definitely need to know the name of the owner or meiginin (名義人), without it you cannot get the NTT to do any changes.
If this all seems confusing you can always use http://www.bbapply.com/ to get your Internet hooked up. Even then you need to know some details, but they will help you deal with the Internet company in English.
In Japan part of the problem is that, like someone said, you have the company that owns the phone lines (NTT), the actual ADSL connection service that provides the ADSL or Fiber Optic lines (like NTT's FLETS), and on top of that an Internet Service Provider (such as OCN). Most bigger companies (like NTT or Yahoo BB often provide the last two together. You will need all of these to connect an ADSL and (at least) the last two for a fiber optic line.
Hope this helps! You can always contact me at gmail (viljami dot nykanen at etc.) if you need help!

WOWZA
I have just had NTT installed today, all in all the process didn't take THAT long, (less than the wait for an iphone!) and it is super fast. fibre optic goodness, highly recommended.
(sorry I think I'm still drunk from last night)
Don't bother getting Plala (one provider). The service is all in Japanese, and unless that's your first language, the technical help is going to be that much harder. My supervisor accidentally signed me up for it, and I got the standard NTT router (which will work for any other NTT-based provider). That router is jut sitting there while I switch to AsahiNet, which has an English helpline. Seems you need the helpline to let you know which numbers to plugin where into the system (I know next to nothing about this stuff).
I am in the same position and have been working with a guy called Jimmie Jenkins! Is this man legit??? I need to know before I go ahead and apply for internet through him. I have heard his name somewhere but I can't remember where!
Holly
Yes, Jimmie Jenkins is fine to work with. He basically acts as a info-giver/liaison between English speakers and Japanese internet companies. I assume he gets a commission from the companies for the work.
