Common Goods Price List for leavers selling their stuff

By admin - Posted on 09 July 2008

To help make some of your buying decisions a little less murky, I have made a list of common household goods and their CHEAPEST prices bought new at a large discount store that is similar to the U.S.’s Wal-Mart.

Please keep in mind that the prices I give are not for top of the line models – the models I give prices for are the basic model – think non-brand name, simplistic functions, basic you-can-get-by-on-it quality.

Recycle (2nd hand shops) also sell many of these items used, though the prices for appliances probably won’t be as low as what you may be expecting for used goods.

Most stores will deliver items to your apartment, but there is usually an additional charge (around \5000 for recycle shops).

Finally, unlike Western apartments, apartments in Japan do not automatically come with any appliances. Most apartments include a small air-conditioning/heating unit with the rent, but you should clarify this with your predecessor. In some cases, ALTs have had to purchase the air-conditioner/heating unit themselves. Other appliances, such as refrigerators, ranges, washing machines, etc., almost always belong solely to the ALT and are not part of the rental package.

Here we go…All the prices are in Japanese Yen, of course. It's currently equal to about 1 US cent. So 5500 yen is like 55 US dollars.
