Mikuni Takidanji Temple Fire-walking ritual

Sunday June 17

During the Kannon Festival at Mikuni Takidanji temple, mountain priests
get together and hold a traditional fire-walking ritual, where monks walk
barefoot on charcoal to pray for people’s good health. We can watch this
esoteric Buddhist event and actually participate in walking (on fire!).

Fukui Phoenix SGG will conduct a tour in English for non-Japanese.

Itinerary
10:30 Meet at FIA
11:30 Arrive at Takidanji Temple
Tour of the temple & garden
Hi-no-taiko(Japanese Drum Performance)
13:00 Hiwatari, fire-walking ritual
14:30 Leave Takidanji Temple
15:30 Arrive at FIA

Built in 1375, Takidanji Temple is the oldest temple in Mikuni. This temple, which belongs to Shingon Buddhism, flourished with the faith and support of generations of rulers of Fukui. It has many important cultural properties and a beautiful landscape garden.

Participation Fee : 500yen/person including admission to Takidanji Temple & Transportation.
